Scope and Contents

Finance Committee records concern the income, investments and expenditures of Mount Holyoke College (1930-1995) and are arranged into the following series: College Budgets and Academic and Administrative Salaries; Meeting Minutes; Proxy Note Proposals, Shareholder Proposals, and Meeting Minutes. College Budgets and Academic and Administrative Salaries materials (1931-1995) consist of budgets and other financial statement, reports, lists and analyses of departmental and individual salaries for faculty and administrators prepared for the Trustees Committee on Education, and correspondence regarding employee mortgage loan and interest policies. There are also minutes and reports of the Board of Trustees Investment and Finance Committees (November 1990-April 1992) and memoranda from various sub-committees (1960-1980). Meeting Minutes (1930-1995) consists of minutes and agenda, correspondence, and reports concerning the investment policies of the College. These records discuss the performance of investment and divestment strategies and also include information about academic and administrative salaries and annuities. Also included are the Board of Trustees Audit Committee reports for Mount Holyoke College and for Five Colleges, Inc., Investment Proxy Reports from 1989-1992, subcommittee meeting reports from November, 1990-April, 1991 subcommittee memoranda from 1960-1980, and special expenditures files. Of special note are financial reports from December 1970-May 1972 with proxy voting information for the committee. One memo discusses the possibility of adding a woman to serve on the General Motors Board of Directors despite the defect of sex. Proxy Note Proposals, Shareholder Proposals, and Meeting Minutes (1989-1992, 1997-1998) consist of proxy statements and reports, records for the Board of Trustees Proxy and Investment Committees, minutes of Finance Committee meetings including a conference call in January, 1998. Many of these records concern Mount Holyoke's investments in South Africa and Northern Ireland and in cigarette companies.

Historical Note

The Mount Holyoke College Finance Committee is a standing committee of the Board of Trustees. The primary purpose of the committee is to select and monitor investments on behalf of Mount Holyoke College. A secondary purpose is to oversee the work of the chief financial officer of the College.

These materials chiefly concern investments of the College and include information about faculty and staff salaries.

History of the Collection

Most records in this collection were transferred to the Mount Holyoke College Archives and Special Collections between 1999-2004. Each accretion has been processed as a separate series.
