Historical Note
Sponsored by a Ford Foundation grant, the Non-Western Studies Program was established in 1959 as a cooperative venture between Mount Holyoke, Amherst and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts. As one of a number of intercollegiate ventures, the aim was to extend and enrich the educational capacities of the individual institutions by combining the unique resources of each. The Nonwestern Studies Program focused specifically on an interdisciplinary examination of problems of economic and political development and restructuring in African, Middle Eastern, and Southeast Asian countries. The program lasted two years. In 1962/63, it was subsumed under Asian-African Studies.
