Historical Note

The Dean of Studies advised the upperclass students with academic concerns and leave of absences from the College. The Dean also supervised the Dean of First Year Studies and the Dean of Sophomore Studies activities as well as the Dean of International Affairs. The Dean of Studies position was created in 1970 by dividing the duties of the Academic Dean into two separate positions: Dean of the Faculty and Dean of Studies. The Dean of Studies was an appointed position filled by a member of the College faculty for a three year term. In 1992 the position of Dean of the College was reinstated. The Dean of the College position was originally created in 1920 and eliminated in 1929. The new Dean of the College duties included managing the academic deans offices which included the Dean of International Affairs, Deans of Studies, and the Dean of Learning Skills offices. The Dean of Studies reported to the new Dean of the College from 1992-1997. In 1997, the position of the Dean of Studies was eliminated and the duties were absorbed by Dean of the College. The position of Dean of Studies was held by Isabelle Baird Sprague, 1970/71; Joan Estelle Ciruti, 1971/72 -1973/74; Marilyn Pryor, 1974/75 - 1976/77; Harriet Pollatsek, 1977/78-1979/80; Robert B.
