Scope and Contents
The records contain correspondence, reports, grant applications, budget information, fliers, brochures, articles and publications. The records document a number of grants and grant funded projects in detail. Information regarding applications for grants, administration of funds, personnel, and assesment of the projects are included in the records. The grant projects represented all relate to either the SummerMath Program (a program with both a component for teachers and for highschool students. The program for students was designed build the self-confidence of young women in math, while the component for tearchers was intended to assist teachers in developing new teaching methods in mathematics), or the Magnet Middle School program (a partnership program formed by Madelaine Marquez and President Elizabeth Kennen with the Holyoke Public School system assist them in exploring and improving on the middle school concept). The records contain information on grants provided by Pew Charitable Trust, Ford Foundation, Knight Foundation, Jessie B. Cox Charitable Trust, Cambridge Mustard Seed Foundation, Charles A. Dana Foundation, NYNEX Foundation and the Merrill Lynch Foundation. In addition, there is also a large quantity of information on the Quasar project, a project related to the teaching of math that was conducted in cooperation with the University of Pittsburg. The records also document various programs and activities of the College overseen or participated in by Madelaine Marquez in her capacity as either Affirmative Action Officer, or Special Assistant to the President.

Historical note:
The Office for Educational and Academic Affairs operated as its own entity under the auspices of the President's Office from 1990-1997. The office was run by Madelaine Marquez, Special Assistant to the President, who held this position from 1989-1997. The Office of Educational and Academic Affairs participated in a wide variety of activities, but was primarily responsible for administration of grants related to the SummerMath Program and the Magnet Middle School. In addition to these duties Madelaine Marquez also held the position of Affirmative Action Officer for the College from 1992-1997.
