About Five Colleges ArchivesSpace

This is a database of finding aids that describe college records and manuscript collections at Mount Holyoke College and Hampshire College. Finding aids are collection guides that provide information about the creation, historical context, and contents of primary source materials. They describe the organization, origin, extent, contents, dates, topics, and creators of the records, in brief summaries or detailed inventories. Through this site, you can search and browse these finding aids for our more than 680 collections available for research.

The holdings include books, manuscripts (such as scrapbooks, diaries, and personal papers), historical institutional records (such as yearbooks, annual reports, and minutes), digitized and born-digital resources, and materials documenting the history of these Pioneer Valley colleges. The core of the manuscripts collections are often related to alums, staff, or faculty of each institution. Unless otherwise noted, the materials described are physically available in our respective repositories. Please note that not all finding aids are available online yet and thus we encourage you to ask our staff if additional description is available for a collection.

Guide to Searching

This interface was created to serve as a means to search through descriptions of primary sources, allowing for the discovery of manuscripts and records held by Archives and Special Collections at Mount Holyoke and Hampshire. You can start with a basic keyword search or use the drop down menus to create a more advanced search of collections through creator, subject, title field, or a certain range of dates. Use the sections in the top bar for browsing by collections, subjects, and repositories. For more search tips, please see below:

Searches are not case sensitive.
To search an exact phrase of two or more words, use double quotes. (e.g. "Mountain Day" or "Outing Club" or "Eqbal Ahmad")
To find materials that include all of your search terms, use the word AND between the terms. (e.g. Woolley AND Marks)
To broaden the search to include multiple search terms use the word OR between the terms. (e.g. “African American” OR “Black” OR “Negro”)
To search for the variation of words, utilize an asterisk where a different letter occurs (e.g. wom*n will give you results with "woman" or "women")
To exclude a term from your search, put a minus sign in front of it. (e.g. the search “alumnae association” -records will find materials with the phrase “alumnae association” but without the word records)
Create advanced searches by clicking the + button to add a new line to your search.
