Biographical / Historical
SOURCE (Students of Under-Represented Cultures and Ethnicities) is a coalition of multi-cultural student groups based at the Lebrón-Wiggins-Pran Cultural Center at Hampshire College. Established as the Third World Organization in 1972, SOURCE changed its name in December 1981 "citing the ambiguity and subordination implied by the term 'Third World.'" (Tim Shary, A History of Student Activities, 1978-1982) From February 23-March 1, 1988, SOURCE occupied the Dakin Master's House to protest racism on campus and the lack of institutional support for students of color. The creation of the Lebrón-Wiggins-Pran Cultural Center was one of the institutional changes that resulted in response to this action.
