Hampshire's Ultimate Frisbee team was established in the early 1970s, a time when the sport was expanding rapidly on college campuses across the United States. Hampshire's team was quite competitive: on May 21, 1974, the college's newspaper, The Climax, reported that the team had "established itself as undisputed New England champ" in a "flurry of games over a three week period" that included a 36-35 tie-breaker against Tufts University. In 1976, Hampshire hosted the National Ultimate Frisbee Championships (the first 16-team single elimination Ultimate Frisbee tournament), coming in second to Rutgers University. Since 1998, the team has been called the Red Scare.
